Statement of Progressive Principles

Progressives recognize their responsibilities to their family, their neighbors, the environment, and future generations.  Our communities are strong only when all families have social and economic security, and when our neighborhoods are livable and accessible to all residents.  We demand the highest ethical standards and transparency from our government, and strive for an independent media that holds all of us accountable.

Put Family First

  • Support working families
    • Advance living wage jobs
    • Provide affordable, quality healthcare
  • Promote understanding, equality and non-violent resolution of conflicts
    • Ensure opportunities are not limited by race, class, ethnicity, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, age, faith or disability
    • Protect human rights by upholding civil liberties, civil rights and immigrants' rights
  • Strengthen family planning and education services

Create Livable Communities

  • Provide equal, high-quality education
  • Empower neighborhood planning
  • Promote a healthy environment and responsible use of natural resources
    • Improve transit planning and services
    • Encourage environmental design and green building
  • Increase the supply of affordable housing
  • Provide equal and sufficient access to neighborhood services, including parks and recreation, libraries and emergency services
  • Enforce accessibility standards
  • Encourage small businesses and local commerce

Improve Government Accountability and Public Discourse

  • Demand government transparency, integrity and honesty
  • Elevate the public's role in the decision-making process
  • Encourage responsible fiscal policies to address priorities while balancing the budget
  • Ensure clean elections, public financing of elections and integrity in the voting process 

Support Balanced, Independent Media

  • Promote diversity in media ownership to ensure that all sides on an issue are heard
  • Support existing and emerging independent and alternative media
  • Develop more reliable sources of information

Currently, our organization is connecting with all of the progressive organizations that helped us develop the statement of progressive principles along with additional progressive organizations to get the progressive community to endorse these principles. We believe that the progressive statement of principles can be used as an organizing tool and a way to make a clear and succinct statement as to what it means to be a progressive.

-- Join an unprecedented effort to establish a Statement of Progressive Principles for the San Diego region.
-- Join a broad-based alliance of progressive organizations in the San Diego region.
